Who's Who?
A team of young people and Hannah from HeadStart worked together throughout 2022 to make resources to help explain different professional roles which young people might work with here in Cornwall (e.g. School Nurse, Youth Worker).
On this page you will find 28 films each with an introduction to a different role who works with children and young people here in Cornwall.
A huge thank you to Reignite Youth Panel and Hear Our Voice for their creativity and involvement in the project and to shape it to what it is to date.
To get involved in projects similar to this, please email headstartyouth@cornwall.gov.uk - we'd love to work with you.
What's happening next?
If you are a professional working in a role and would like to have a video added to this page, or you are a young person and have an idea for who we should work with to create a video, please do get in touch headstartyouth@cornwall.gov.uk
The young people we worked alongside on this project also told us they would like to make an animation which gives ideas and explains what some of them do to help look after their own wellbeing day to day. In spring 2023, we will be working together to create this and will upload to this page once it is ready!

Who's Who? Cornwall - Children's Rights Advocate
An introduction to the role of a Children's Rights Advocate here in Cornwall.
What is a Children’s Rights Advocate (CRA)?
They are very experienced social workers who are employed by Cornwall Council to ensure
that everyone involved in looking after you is acting as responsible and conscientious
parent would. The CRA fulfils all of the statutory duties of an Independent Reviewing
Officer as this is a requirement that the local authority has to provide.
They have a clear role to:
visit you
listen to you
talk to you about your wishes and feelings
chair your review meetings and review your child/care plan on a regular basis
monitor how things are going for you
make sure plans happen for you
When do I get one?
Shortly after you become a child /young person in care (looked after), your CRA will get in
touch to talk to you about your first meeting. They will help you to understand more about
the meetings and why we have them. They will give you a pack of information about what
they will talk to you about and what will happen at your meeting. You should be able to
keep the same CRA while you are in care but if for any reason you want to change your
CRA you can talk to the CRA Service Manager about your worries and views.
What do they do?
They chair your meetings (or help you chair the meeting if you want to) and will arrange to
speak with you before each one, ideally several days before the meeting happens. They
will talk to you about who should come to your meeting, where you would like it to take
place, who you would prefer not to come and whether you want to come for all or only
part of the meeting. They get everybody at your meeting to agree what needs to happen
next for you. They will make sure that you get a written copy of what was talked about and
the actions agreed there no later than four weeks after the meeting happens. They will
follow up to make sure that everyone does what they agreed to do, and try to sort out any
problems when things don’t happen as agreed.
How can they help me?
They will make sure your views and thoughts are heard and included in your care plan.
They will make sure that your meeting talks about things that matter to you. If you think
your views are not being listened to, you might want to have an advocate who will talk on
your behalf at meetings – you can ask your Social Worker or CRA more about advocates
and what they can do. The most important thing is that you have your say.

Education Mental Health Practitioners work within Mental Health Support Teams.
Mental health support teams
The team in Cornwall are an NHS service which works within school settings to provide early intervention for primary school children who are experiencing difficulties such as low mood and anxiety. They also support education staff in implementing strategies across the whole school to try to ensure that children's wellbeing is supported and promoted throughout school life.
The teams aim to deliver 3 core functions:
Delivering evidence-based interventions in schools for mild to moderate mental health issues.
Supporting the senior mental health lead in each education setting to introduce or develop their whole school or college approach to mental health and emotional wellbeing.
Giving timely advice to school and college staff, and liaising with external specialist services, to help children and young people to get the right support and stay in education.
